Microneedling Aftercare: What to Tell Your Patients

Good aftercare advice improves results and reduces complications. Here is a simple framework you can share with every microneedling patient.

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the skin's natural repair processes. The days that follow are important — and clear aftercare advice helps patients get the best results while minimising irritation and infection risk.

The first 24 hours

  • Expect redness and a feeling similar to mild sunburn.
  • Avoid make-up, active skincare and touching the face.
  • Use only the gentle products recommended by the practitioner.

Days 2 to 7

  • Continue gentle cleansing and barrier-supporting moisturisers.
  • Avoid retinoids, acids, scrubs, saunas, swimming pools and intense exercise for the period you advise.
  • Apply broad-spectrum sun protection every day and avoid direct sun exposure.

When to get in touch

Patients should contact the clinic if they notice increasing pain, swelling, warmth, pustules or any signs of infection, or if redness persists beyond the expected timeframe.

Planning a course

Most indications benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. Reviewing progress with standardised photographs helps patients see the gradual improvement.
